17 years ago, evil left an indelible mark that would change the world forever
17 years ago, men with darkness in their hearts perpetrated an unthinkable act of violence
17 years ago innocent blood was spilled and “normal” was shattered
17 years ago, the world wept for senseless loss of life as pure hatred was on display
Where were you on September 11, 2001? I’m sure you remember. That date is permanently seared in the memories of millions everywhere. On that fateful day terrorists used planes to kill nearly 3,000 innocent people. Many realized for the first time the true depths of evil in the human heart, and the fragility of life.
What lesson would God teach us from such an appalling tragedy? I admit I don’t have all the answers. I do remember, many people for the first time faced the shallowness and emptiness of their lives, and turned to God as a result. Millions came together to pray.
One lesson God would teach us all is that our only lasting hope is in Him. Life has always been uncertain; September 11 only highlighted that fact. Where do you turn for your security and hope? Put your life in Jesus hands, for only He offers us a “kingdom which cannot be shaken.” (Hebrews 12:28)
It seems that in the seventeen years (Wow, yes it was 17 years ago) since our country’s heart and skyline were ripped apart, we still struggle with not being shaken. We struggle with how to spend this day that represents such pain and, maybe even to this day, fear.
9/11 has come to serve as a day of remembrance for the many trials we have endured as a nation. The continued threats and anxiety created by ongoing terror threats have become the “new normal”. Some wonder if we’ll ever be free of that sense of unease in our daily lives. Violent rampages, bombings, mass shootings and other unthinkable atrocities are inflicted upon innocent victims and leave us reeling with grief and disbelief.
Too many in this great land are weary. They wonder… Will we get through these turbulent times? The answer comes from the truths of the Bible… and it is a resounding YES! For example, the story of Joseph reveals that even when life hits us with multiple blows, with God’s help, we will overcome. On a day like September 11, we do well to remember that what man intends for evil, God can use for good. (Genesis 50:20)
It’s up to you today… how will you remember the 9/11 anniversary this year? It’s up to you how will you respond to the daily sense of unease for our nation and for safety. But one way is to understand and be reminded that God does redeem evil and use it for good. (Romans 8:28).
It’s up to you today… but, I’d suggest you read the story of Joseph (Genesis 37-50). He was mistreated by his family, lied about to his boss and faced a famine. Joseph chose to focus his efforts on bringing life and nourishment to all. Today we face a famine of hope. As God’s people, let’s dispense sustenance and HOPE to our generation, offering a plan and a story of God’s grace and mercy in a time of turmoil. That’s how I plan to spend 9/11 this year.
It’s up to you today… will you choose to allow the circle of hate to continue? Will you make peace in the name of God? Will you use this as your call to make a difference and sow seeds of love into the hearts and minds of those around us through our words and deeds? Will you invite someone to experience a life-giving relationship with Jesus?
It’s up to you today… will you choose to live a lifestyle of worship and remember that God is for us (Romans 8:31), and with God’s help, we’ll get through this. Let’s lead a harvest of hope, together. It has been said that “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men should do nothing.”
IT’S UP TO YOU TODAY …
